Make the door safe before you test it

A door that will not close can affect security, draughts and access. Leave it in the safest position you can reach without force. Keep fingers clear of hinges and the closing edge, and keep children and pets away while you observe the fault. If the glass is cracked or the door cannot be secured, explain that immediately when you contact a repairer.

Do not lift a heavy glazed door by its handle, wedge a lock with a tool or repeatedly slam the door. Forcing it can bend hardware, damage the frame or turn a small alignment issue into a larger repair. Note whether the door is open, closed but unlatched, or unable to move past a particular point.

Key Window Care provides repair-led work for existing doors. It does not advertise a guaranteed emergency or same-day service, so the useful first step is an accurate description of the security and access problem.

  • Keep the door supported and hands clear of the hinge side.
  • Do not force the key, handle or multipoint lock.
  • Say whether the door can be locked and whether the glass is intact.

Read the symptom before guessing the cause

A door that drags at the threshold can be out of alignment, have worn hinges or be affected by a change in the frame. A door that catches at the top or lock side may have dropped slightly. If the handle moves but the door will not latch, the keep, latch or multipoint mechanism may not be meeting correctly. If the key will not turn, the lock may be under pressure because the door is not sitting squarely.

Glass and hardware are separate questions. Misted glass can affect the appearance and insulation of a door, but replacing the sealed unit does not by itself correct a dropped hinge or failed lock. A broken pane is a safety issue and may need a glass replacement assessment. Describe every symptom rather than choosing the service name yourself.

Confirmed Key Window Care services include door repairs, glass replacement, handles and hinges, and locks and mechanisms. The part that needs attention should be confirmed from the opening and the compatible hardware, not from a generic photograph of a similar door.

Useful observations you can make safely

With the door stationary, check whether the gap around the frame changes from top to bottom and whether the latch lines up with the keep. Look for a visible loose cover, damaged seal or object at the threshold, but do not remove trim or adjust hinge screws. If the door opens, move it gently through its normal travel and note when resistance starts.

Try the handle once without extra pressure and observe whether it returns to its usual position. If the key enters but will not turn, stop rather than twisting harder. For a multipoint lock, do not lift the handle repeatedly to force the bolts. The description “handle lifts but door still will not latch” is more useful than an assumption that the lock needs replacing.

If rain or a draught is part of the problem, note where it appears and whether it changes when the door is pressed gently against the seal. Do not cover drainage holes or apply sealant around moving parts before the cause is assessed.

  • Take one whole-door image and close-ups of the latch, handle and hinge side.
  • Note where the door catches and whether the latch reaches the keep.
  • Stop at the first sign of excessive resistance or movement in the glass.

Give the repairer the right information

Send photographs from the inside and outside where safe, including the whole frame, threshold and hardware. Add your postcode, a contact number, the door material if known, and whether it is a front, back, patio or internal door. Say whether it can close, latch and lock, and whether the fault is constant or weather-related. Mention stairs, parking or other access constraints before a visit.

Key Window Care is based in Bristol and visits Bristol, Bath and Weston-super-Mare within a working radius of around 35 miles, subject to the postcode. There is no call-out fee. Photographs help with the first conversation, but a suitable quote may still require checking alignment, hinges, seals, glass and locking points in person.

A repair-led assessment can identify whether adjustment is enough or whether a handle, hinge, lock or glass unit is the failed component. If the existing frame is not suitable for the requested work, that limitation should be explained clearly rather than hidden behind a generic replacement recommendation.

Agree the repair and check the result

Before work starts, ask whether the quote covers adjustment, parts, fitting, testing and disposal. Ask what would need a revised quote if another worn component is found. For glass, confirm whether the recommendation is for a pane or a sealed unit and what specification is being supplied. For hardware, ask how compatibility will be checked.

Key Window Care confirms a 10-year guarantee on new double-glazed units. That is a guarantee for new units, not an automatic promise for every door repair, handle or lock. Ask what cover applies to your work and keep the details with the quote.

After the repair, close and latch the door gently, then check the lock without forcing the key. It should operate without lifting, slamming or repeated attempts. If the door still drags, will not latch or develops a new security problem, stop using extra force and send the repairer a fresh description.
