Glass replacement for windows and doors
A cracked, broken, scratched or failed pane can affect comfort, security and everyday use. Glass replacement focuses on the pane or sealed unit that needs attention while keeping the existing frame where it remains suitable. We work on domestic window and door glazing and assess the opening before recommending a specification. The right glass is determined by the frame, location and purpose, rather than by a photograph alone.
A repair can be appropriate after accidental damage, a failed sealed unit or a change in the way a room is used. It is important to distinguish a pane that is damaged from condensation sitting on a surface, and from moisture trapped between insulated panes. We will ask questions, review photographs and inspect the frame when necessary. We do not promise that every pane or frame can be repaired.
Problems we are asked to assess
Common enquiries include a visible crack, a broken pane, a draught around glazing, a unit that has become misted, or patterned glass that is no longer intact. A door may also feel unsafe when its glass is damaged or when the pane is part of the closing assembly. Tell us whether the damage is internal or external, whether the pane is loose, and whether the window or door still closes and locks.
A mark that can be wiped away is different from damage within the glass or a failed sealed unit. Do not press on cracked glass, tape across a loose pane as a permanent measure, or remove beads yourself. Keep people away from the area and contact us for advice. If there is an immediate danger from broken glazing, make the area safe from a distance and use the appropriate emergency service.
Choosing suitable replacement glass
The replacement may be a single pane, a sealed double glazed unit or a patterned or obscured pane. We consider dimensions, thickness, edge details, spacer, coatings and the way the glass is retained. A pane in or near a door or low in a wall may need safety glazing. UK building guidance treats safety and energy performance as relevant even where formal approval is not needed, so the location must be considered before ordering.
Pattern, colour and obscurity can be difficult to judge from a phone photograph. If matching existing glass matters, photograph the full pane in daylight and a close view of its texture. We will explain what can be matched and what cannot be confirmed until the glass is measured or inspected. A substitute chosen only by appearance can be unsuitable for the opening.
The assessment before a quote
We look at the pane, beads, gasket or putty, frame condition, drainage and the way the opening operates. We check for signs of movement, water ingress or impact and consider whether another fault has contributed to the damage. Exact measurements are important, especially for an insulated unit. We may need an arranged visit before a firm quote where the specification or access cannot be established from photographs.
A photograph is useful evidence, not a guarantee of diagnosis. It can show a crack or clouding, but it will not show every edge detail, thickness or hidden defect. We will say when a measurement, safe access check or further information is needed. That keeps the proposed repair tied to the actual pane rather than an assumed standard size.
What the repair visit involves
Before work starts, we protect the immediate area and confirm which pane is being replaced. The damaged glass is removed with care, the opening is checked and the replacement is fitted using the frame's appropriate retaining details. Beads, gaskets or sealant are refitted as required, then the opening is checked for stability and operation. The exact method depends on the frame and glazing system.
Please clear objects from the sill and provide a safe route to the window or door. Tell us about pets, children, awkward access or a door that must remain in service. We can discuss the practical sequence before arranging the work. Glass is heavy and sharp; customers should not attempt removal, especially where a pane is cracked, loose, overhead or part of a door.
Glass-only repair or wider replacement
Replacing one pane can make sense when the frame is sound and the rest of the opening works correctly. It can preserve the existing finish and avoid disturbing sound windows. A wider repair may be needed if the frame is distorted, rotten, badly damaged or unable to retain the glass securely. A handle, hinge or lock fault may also need separate attention. We will explain the boundary of the glazing repair we can provide.
Complete window or door replacement is a different project with different design, installation and compliance considerations. Key Window Care is repair-only. We can discuss the glass or hardware fault and tell you when complete installation or specialist advice is outside our service.
What affects the quote
The quote depends on the pane or unit size, glass type, thickness, pattern, coating, safety requirement, access and the retaining system. Removing a damaged unit may reveal a problem with a bead, gasket or frame that needs to be discussed. We do not give prices before knowing what is being replaced because a visually similar pane can have a different specification and fitting method.
Send the postcode, the approximate dimensions if they can be obtained safely, a whole-frame photograph and close-ups of the damage. Add whether the glass is in a door, within reach of the floor or close to a door opening. These details help us identify questions early and prepare a clearer quote.
Aftercare and guarantee
Once the pane is fitted, avoid leaning on it or forcing the opening while the work is being checked. Keep drainage paths clear and use non-abrasive cleaning materials. If you notice movement, a new draught or water around the edge, contact us rather than applying a permanent patch. A glazing fault and a frame fault can look similar, so early information helps.
Our 10-year guarantee applies to new double glazed units only. It does not automatically cover single panes, hardware, frames or every repair. We explain the relevant cover at quote stage. We are public liability insured, do not charge a call-out fee, and work Monday to Friday from Bristol across Bristol, Bath and Weston-super-Mare within around 35 miles.
After a glass repair, normal cleaning is fine once the area is settled, but avoid abrasive pads and tools near the seals. If you notice a new crack, movement, water at the edge or a change in how the opening closes, stop forcing it and contact us. Those signs may relate to the frame or hardware rather than the pane itself, so a clear follow-up description is useful.
