What misted double glazing means
Misted or cloudy glass is usually a sign that the sealed double glazed unit has failed. An insulating glass unit has panes separated by a spacer and sealed around the edge. When that seal no longer keeps the cavity dry, moisture can appear between the panes. It is different from condensation on the room side or outside surface, which can normally be wiped away. The trapped haze remains inside the unit and often changes with the weather.
A failed unit does not automatically mean the whole window has reached the end of its life. If the frame, beads and surrounding opening are sound, replacing the sealed unit can deal with the glazing fault while keeping the existing window. We inspect the situation before recommending anything, because a frame that is distorted, badly damaged or no longer supports the glass may need a different conversation. We repair; we do not sell complete window installations.
Signs the sealed unit may have failed
Look for a persistent cloudy patch, droplets or a milky film between the panes. You may notice the view is blurred even after cleaning both sides, or that the appearance changes from a light haze to visible beads of moisture. A failed unit can be more noticeable in cold or damp weather, but weather is not the only possible explanation. Condensation on one surface can have an indoor humidity cause, so location matters.
Check the edges as well as the middle of the glass. A misted cavity is often visible all across the unit or along a lower edge, while a mark on one surface can usually be reached with a cloth. Do not prise out glazing beads or try to separate the panes. A photograph of the whole window, followed by a close view of the haze and frame edge, gives us a safer starting point.
How we diagnose the problem
We first establish where the moisture is sitting and whether the unit is double glazed. We look at the frame, opening style, beads, drainage details and any visible damage. Exact measurements are needed for a replacement unit; the glass thickness, spacer, overall size and any pattern or coating can all matter. A photograph helps us understand the problem, but it cannot replace checking dimensions and the frame in person when a quote depends on them.
We also separate a glazing fault from a wider window problem. A handle that will not engage, a hinge that has dropped or a frame that has moved can affect how the window closes without causing mist between panes. Those issues may need window repairs or handles and hinges alongside, or instead of, glass work. We will explain what we can see and what remains uncertain before work is agreed.
What replacing the unit involves
The repair normally involves preparing the work area, removing the beads or retaining system carefully, taking out the failed sealed unit and checking the rebate. The replacement is ordered to the measured requirements, then fitted with appropriate packers and glazing details for that frame. The beads are refitted and the opening is checked for a clean, secure finish. The exact sequence varies between uPVC, timber and aluminium frames, so a generic online diagram cannot tell you how your window should be dismantled.
We take care around furniture, curtains and internal finishes, but the work still involves handling glass. Please clear small items from the sill and tell us about access constraints before the visit. If the frame has hidden damage, a replacement unit may not be the right answer; we will pause and discuss that rather than force a poor fit. The aim is a suitable repair to the existing opening.
Repairing the unit or replacing the window
Keeping a sound frame can reduce disruption and material use compared with replacing a complete window. It can also preserve the existing opening, handles and finish. That does not make a glass-only repair right in every case. A badly warped frame, failed hardware, water damage, unsafe glazing or a window that cannot close securely may need wider work. We look at the condition of the complete assembly, not just the cloudy pane.
The GGF explains that a failed sealed unit can usually be replaced by a window repair company once exact measurements have been taken. Building and safety requirements still need to be considered for replacement glazing, particularly where the glass is in a door or another critical location. What affects the quote
The cost of a misted-unit repair depends on the measured size, the number of panes, glass thickness, spacer, coating, pattern, obscurity and whether the unit sits in a window or door. Access, removal of damaged beads, difficult glazing details and any frame or hardware work can also affect the job. We do not publish a blanket price because a small-looking pane can require very different specifications from another pane of the same apparent size.
A useful enquiry includes the rough opening size if you can measure it safely, the room or elevation, whether the haze is between the panes, and photographs of the whole frame and close-up. Do not remove anything to measure hidden edges. We can confirm what information is still needed and separate the glass work from other repairs in the quote.
What to photograph and what happens next
Take one landscape photograph showing the whole window or door, one close-up of the mist and one of the frame edge or glazing bead. Photograph from inside if that is where the haze is clearest. Include a note about whether the opening still locks, whether the handle works and whether there is any crack or impact damage. Avoid reflections where possible, and do not lean out of a window or climb to get a better angle.

Care after the repair
Keep the new glass clean with a soft cloth and a suitable glass cleaner, taking care not to scratch seals, beads or coatings. Do not block drainage paths in the frame, and report water entering around the frame rather than assuming it is another failed unit. Handles and hinges should be operated without force. If a window begins to bind, early attention may prevent extra strain on the hardware.
